There is a technique of winding toroids where wire is wound to about 1/2
torus, crossed over and continued backwards at the coil beginning (coil
"circling" direction remains the same though). It is supposed to reduce
end-to-end capacity, it is used with ferrite cores, and mainly for
transformers. BUT, the same method could be used to make air cores by
simply bending two thick wire helices into two half tori, and subsequently
joining the lose ends.
BTW ice is used in trumpets production as a filling for bending brass tubes ;)
