Gary's patent is number 5,489,914. According to the U.S. Patent Office
data base, it has expired from lack of renewal.

Although this might be a good solution if a number of discrete narrow
frequency bands are involved, I don't know of its having been applied to
the problem of making a generally broadbanded antenna.
