You'll find that NEC4 runs a lot faster than NEC2 (at least that's my
casual perception). I think it's because the code is structured (and
compiled) in a way more suited to modern configurations of PCs.

The other thing to think about is that the single precision version of NEC4
is as accurate, if not more so, than the double precision NEC2. However,
I've also found that the run time difference between single and double is
very small, at least on smaller models (<1000 segments).

More time is spent in overhead functions(reading/writing files, building
the matrix, etc.) than in the actual computation.
