NEC-LIST: Coffee can?

I'm sure that a coffee can be modeled well enough by means of wire
mesh in NEC-4; and I can believe that this is possible also in NEC-2;
but I don't understand how folks are modeling coffee cans with
surface patches. Isn't patch modeling valid only for a _closed_
surface? Are people building patch models of coffee-cans having
walls and bottoms of nonzero thickness (but open tops)?
