NEC-LIST: Waveguides and Surface patches

I'm confused...
Both the NEC-2 and NEC-4 User's guides make it quite clear that only "volumnous" surfaces can be modelled with surface patches (SP/SC cards), *not* thin plates. Yet there abound models of waveguide-type antennas using SP/SC cards. Clearly there is a conflict. Has it been found/determined that the limitations of the MFIE used in SP/SC calculations are not significant for these types of antennas, are those models "lucky", or are those models "not recommended"?
