The last time I used a discone to make some EMI measurements was more than
10 years ago, so I am going entirely from memory here. I recall the
particilar discone I used had a some sort of a rigid coax "stick" that
screwed into the biconical antenna. This connection did not use a standard
RF connector. I am thinking that this "stick" may not have had a balun in
it. The coax feed line "stick" was exactly perpendicular to the antenna
which could also reduced the feedline radiation without the need of a
broadband type of balun.
