Don't forget the hard disk, which is the bottleneck on most econo P4
systems. A good 15K rpm SCSI HDD really helps for compiles and
simulations that involve disk I/O. That being said, make sure you also
have enough physical RAM to keep yourself out of swap-land for obvious
reasons.
Xeon scalability in the form of multi-cpu configurations is beneficial
if the O/S you are using supports multi-processing (eg. a Windows SERVER
O/S).

Subject: RE: NEC-LIST:P4 vs. Xenon
Intel's Xeon (not Xenon) processor is based on the Pentium 4 core. The
Xeon
shares similar stats with the Pentium 4, such as a 256 KB L2 cache and
availability at speeds of 1.4 GHz and up. Seems the only difference in
Xeon
capability is running in dual-processor configurations, which the
regular
Pentium 4 is can't do. Found one internet site that has the dual 1.7GHz
Xeon
just barely defeating a dual 1.0GHz P3 system on a Linux kernel compile.
Check here.. for some benchmarks, I'm sure there are others.

Finally it is not ONLY a fast processor with lost of memory that makes a
system
fast, but a good motherboard and a good video board as well. I have
seen
some
impressive boots (6 seconds!) with a single Intel P4 2.4GHz, 1G mem,
with
Quadro 4 900XGL video board.

Subject: NEC-LIST:P4 vs. Xenon
Does anyone have any data on the relative speeds the P4 and Xenon
processors doing NEC calculations? Assume they are running comparable
clock, bus rates and either Linux or Win OS's.. I am not sure the Xenon
is
worth the extra cost in single processor configurations.
