It's very important that the segment junctions be directly across from
each other when wires are close and parallel. If the two wires are
unequal lengths, split the longer wire into two or, if necessary, three
wires, with one being exactly the same length as the shorter parallel
wire and directly across from it. Give that wire the same number of
segments as the parallel wire. Make the segment lengths of the new
wire(s) approximately the same as for the main parallel wire.

can see this graphically by looking in the manual index under "Parallel
wires".
