WCC..??
Hello. Please see my correspondence with Mr. Smith below...can you
help?
I wrote:
Mr. Smith, my name is Rob Leiden, K1UI. I am on the Board of Directors
of the Chatham Marconi Maritime Center (see www.ChathamMarconi.org) I
was told by one of the former operators at WCC that Collins Radio did
the engineering of the antenna field at WCC (6 remote-tunable
rhombics, a log-periodic and some Marconi-T"s) and I was wondering if
you had any idea how I might find any of that engineering information,
that is, if it still exists.
Any ideas would be appreciated.we are in the process of obtaining a
long-term lease for the original RCA Marine Corp. operations building
in Chatham, MA on Cape Cod with the goal of creating a radio museum
including an amateur radio station using the antenna field.

Mr. Smith's reply:
Rob -
I regret that I cannot provide the information you desire. Such a long
time has gone by. If the antenna system was put in by Collins, I
presume it occurred before Rockwell International gained control. That
would have put it in the 1960's.
At that time, the antenna work was being done in Building 403 of the
Richardson, Texas complex. Dr. Bob Carroll was in charge of the
antenna work and the only other names I recall are Tom Mortimer and
Les Griffee. All three may be dead by now because I remember them as
being a bit older than I was and I am in my 80's now. Optimistically,
hope not and do a Google search to find the antenneX home page. A man
named Griffee writes for antenneX. While I doubt he is Les Griffee, he
may be a son or grandson and may have inherited some of Les' reports.
It may be worth a try.
Since Rockwell gained control, they sold the defense work to Boeing
and recently spun apart to form Rockwell Automation and Rockwell
Collins. Again Google search to find the Rockwell Collins home page
and try to contact the Public Relations group. They probably will not
be able to answer your questions but try to find out where the 1960's
technical library of Collins Radio went. At that time it was in
Building 401 of the Richardson, Texas Complex and it may now be in
Plano, Texas. If you can find the technical library, telephone the
librarian and try to arrange a personal visit to the library and go
through the Collins Reports. You may find a report on the station.
Do the same thing at the technical library in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Finally, I just sent some Collins reports to David Knepper who keeps a
museum of Collins equipment. Send him an email at
collinsradio_at_adelphia.net and tell him you are acting upon my
recommendation. I believe there were two or three reports included
concerning HF station planning and I seem to remember one of them
showing something that could be like WCC. Tell David what you want and
I'm sure he will respond with what he has.
I'm afraid that is about the best I can do. It's been such a long time
... Let me know the results of your search. Good luck with this very
worthwhile project.
With personal regards,
J.L. Smith
