Thanks to all the people who responded to my query. All responses
were most interesting. Possibly I could have been a bit more specific.
The problem lies with the helix end-point coordinate, which should be:
x, 0, z, providing, of course, that the number of turns is an integer.
There are just occasional combinations of turns/segments that produce
the nominal 55 micro-meter end-point displacement.

The executable files have been compiled for Windows 98, NT... with
the DEC Visual Fortran v. 6 compiler, and are exactly as shipped from
LLNL. All executable files are compiled for a maximum of 12,000
segments, with choices of maximum matrix sizes. The program NECPLOT
also clearly indicates the connection breaks.

I would also like to mention that a NEC 4 license is available outside the
