NEC-LIST: Butler Matrix

Hi All ,
          I have a question which is not quite clear to me. In a butler
matrix antenna I know one can get narrow switched beams . Do these beams
have the equivalent gain of the array ? I asked this because in theory
if one would put a receiver on all outputs one would get a high gain in
all directions which would seem to me against physics. Please any
comments would be helpful?
