I have tried to measure choke baluns in the past and
found it to be almost impossible for the home
experimenter. However, I have determined a way to
validate the affectiveness of a balun. That is:
Measure the resonant frequency at the feedpoint.
Attach 1/4 wavelength of coax(assuming 50 ohms) and
measure resonance again. If resonance changes, then
the balun is not balancing properly.
The assumption behind this is that if resonance
changes then the feedline is contributing to the
overall antenna length, meaning that the balun is not
balancing.
