Mark,
When I was modeling VHF and UHF Yagis several years ago, I used a "rule of
thumb" method that adds 1/4 of the boom diameter to the total element
length when placing an insulated element through a metal boom. In
reverse, when modeling a real antenna in NEC, you need to remove the same
length before entering the element length data.
For example, if a real 2m antenna has a director length of 36" and it is
mounted through a 1" OD hollow aluminum boom using an insulated mount,
then to model this element in NEC or MININEC, the actual length used in
modeling is 35.75".
I believe that other Ham antenna manufacturers and designers used a
similar method.
