Brent,
If you have Windows 95, you will be limited to 4095 segments in core, since
only 256MB of RAM can be addressed. Beyond that, swaps with virtual memory
are necessary, which are time-consuming. If you have NT, however, you are
limited only by how much RAM you have. I have used NEC-Win-Pro to over 4000
segments on NT. How many segments is your file? According to the
Nec-Win-Pro Users manual, p. 2-4, with 768MB of RAM you should be able to
handle 6928 segments with NT. Of course, you have to subtract the amount of
RAM that your computer uses to run Windows and anything else that is running
in the background. Just get Nec-Win-Pro opened, and then go into Task
Manager to see how much RAM is left. Use the following formula to see how
many segments you can handle:
Segments = SQRT(RAM/16)
This is derived from the formula in the manual. Read that section of the
manual to see how to use the 32-bit DMA to run large models. You will have
to edit the NEC2D.PAR file as instructed in the manual in order to run more
segments. Here is a link to a good article on the Nittany Scientific web
site on running large models.

Subject: NEC-LIST:segmentation limit
I'm using NEC-Win Pro and have come crashing into the 2000
segment limit
with some surface meshing I'm doing (wide band horn). Does
anyone have any
hints for other NEC cores that can overcome this? I have
768 MB of RAM to
work with.
Thanks!
