First, my thanks to all who took the time to reply. Your responses
are saving me much time. Given the speeds and RAM currently available
to processors my hardware/software dilemma is narrowing down to:
1) 32-bit vs 64-bit CPU architecture
2) Superscalar (multiple instructions per CPU clock cycle) vs
non-superscalar CPU
3) Dual processor vs single processor configuration
4) Don't have a feel for memory caches and memory type (RAMBUS DRAM vs
SDRAM)
5) f77 compiler and routines (e.g. LAPACK) that are matched to the
hardware capabilities
The above are what I need to iron out before getting out the
checkbook. Any further thoughts are as always most welcome.
