Heartily concur with the "have some simple things around". Some which
I found instructive:
- From a handful of parts construct a breadboard regenerative detector
and 1 stage amplifier. Require that it go into regeneration/
oscillation without a thump. Then ask for an analysis of the
operating condition.
- Lecher wires, 2 meter oscillator, SWR detector, assorted loads
including shorts.
- Q-meter, assorted coils, impedances.
Do you have the old GR Experimenter? Much basic info there, such as
Bridges assembled from Laboratory Parts.
Working with the old instruments makes an appreciation of the new
ones. When they start feeling cocky, ask for a design of a decremeter.
