I've been following this "dipoles" discussion with some interest, to
see where it would lead. I'd like to toss out one comment:

Saying that one part or another of an antenna structure causes or does
not cause radiation is NOT the same thing as saying that one antenna
configuration has more gain or higher efficiency than another. I
think it's important to not jump to conclusions about _why_ one
configuration might be a better one than another. (Conclusions, in
particular, with respect to what part of the antenna structure may or
may not be causing the radiation.) I appreciate that Chuck's
observations below address some of the other changes that go on
between the two configurations being considered.

(I'm also not convinced there's much value in assigning radiation, per
se, to one part or another, in our attempt to find antennas which
accomplish some set of objectives...but that's a little different
issue anyway.)
