You can try to have a look at the Markuvitz Waveguide Handbook
published by IEE and to the reference listed there (but they are quite
old).
Unfortunately I don't think it will be easy to locate an 'intermediate
level' reference. Here are a couple of more recent refs:
A.A. El-Sherbiny
'Cutoff Wavelenghtd of Ridged, Circular and Elliptic Guides'
IEEE MTT-21 Jan. 1973
D. Goldberg, L. J. Laslett, R.A.Rimmer
'Modes of Elliptical Waveguides: A Correction'
IEEE MTT-38 nov. 1990
As you will see the analysis of elliptic waveguides involves the
theory of Mathieu functions. A good reference is the McLachlan Book
'Theory of Mathieu Functions'. It is and old book, I think that is
published by Dover now but I am not sure.
