Phase pattern measurements are as easy to collect as are power
patterns. (If you have a phase and amplitude receiver of course)

A wide variety of equipment is available from HP, Scientific-Atlanta,
equipment rental companies, etc. that are capable of supporting phase
pattern measurements.

Finally, computations are valuable, but it is hard to argue against a
well planned and executed measurement.
