The DBF technique was proposed by Hans Steyskal at Rome Labs. in 1987.
The major promise of this technique appears to be in futuristic wireless
communication systems. There are several aspects discussed in the
recent paper by Hans Steyskal:
Hans Steyskal, " Digital Beamforming at Rome Laboratory ", Microwave
Journal, pp. 100-125, February 1996.
Just a few are: (1) Ultra-low sidelobes, (2) Multiple Beams. The paper(s)
by Steyskal discuss the DBF when applied to receive mode. But, Ref. # 7
in the above paper discuss how spectrum efficiency can be obtained by
realizing the features (1) and (2) in the transmission mode of a base
station antenna (switch/ node).
The results of this preliminary investigation show that DBF technique
can be applied to cylindrical conformal arrays.
Please feel free to ask for more hard-copies, if you wish.
